Since I don’t have Mexican heritage, I didn’t know about Mexico’s Independence Day, I always thought it was celebrated on Cinco de Mayo, May 5th. Thus, I had to look up the difference and found the following.
The main difference between Cinco de Mayo and Mexican
Independence Day is that Cinco de Mayo celebrates a military victory, while
Mexican Independence Day celebrates the country’s declaration of Independence.
The Mexican army’s victory was over the French at the Battle
of Puebla in 1862. The battle took place during the French intervention in
Mexico, which was a response to Mexico’s default on debt payments to Europe.
September 16th marks the start of Mexico’s fight
for independence from Spanish colonial rule.
