I have many family members who were Irish and the potato
famine had a big impact on them. They fled Ireland and started over first in
New York State and then traveled westward until they ended up in Wisconsin. In
more recent times, the great depression had similar effects on families, where
they fled and some moved west to California. Knowing these factors help us to
understand why they moved to where they moved. Also, many didn’t just move
their family, they traveled with other families, whether family, friends, or
neighbors.
