May 22 – Seek out records from your ancestor’s funeral
homes. Find the name of the funeral home in obituaries and death certificates,
then contact the home or look for their records in historical societies and
libraries.
Many years ago, when my mother passed away, I took the time
to ask the funeral director about their records. I wanted to know how long they
kept them and where they can be found. I was told each funeral director has
their own records. Sometimes they pass them onto the next funeral director,
sometimes not. They were kept in storage, some on site, and others off site. Thus,
to see these records, advance notice was a must, because they may have to
retrieve the records. Also, if they are planning lots of funerals, they may
want you to come in on a certain day, when they know they won’t be having a
funeral.
