July 31 – Find a website that’s no longer active? Look for it in the wayback machine https://web.archive.org/

I remember hosting a website at GeoCities.com and it appears my URL was http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/6557/. I was such an inexperience researcher back then. Plus, what was available online was very limited. This sure brings back memories.

In the January/February 2024 issue of Family Tree Magazine, they have introduced The Year Ahead, 366 genealogy tips will make 2024 your best research year yet by Lisa A Alzo. Lisa mapped out a day-by-day research plan.

July 30 – Call up a genealogy buddy today – the International Day of Friendship and chat about your research progress.

Ironically, today is my Zoom meeting with one of my genealogy buddies. We are trying to meet, every other week for an hour or so to touch based on all thing’s genealogy. I moved away and I miss our weekly meet ups at our Genealogy Society Library. She would show me new discoveries and how she figured them out. She might even have a problem and I would try to help. I would share discoveries or concerns from my various Facebook groups, she doesn't do Facebook.

Having a buddy is very helpful for bouncing off problems, to share discoveries because they understand your excitement.

In the January/February 2024 issue of Family Tree Magazine, they have introduced The Year Ahead, 366 genealogy tips will make 2024 your best research year yet by Lisa A Alzo. Lisa mapped out a day-by-day research plan.

July 29– Make a picnic out of Grandma’s potato salad or another summer dish recipe.

When I see hints like these, I realize how much I missed out on, not knowing my Grandparent’s very well since they died when I was quite young. However, perhaps you have relatives who knew your grandparents and they knew their favorite dish or favorite recipe. My older siblings knew my grandparents better than I. However, as I am aging, so are they. I have my mother’s old cookbook and small recipe card box to find recipes she may have gotten from her mother.

The Year Ahead – July 28

In the January/February 2024 issue of Family Tree Magazine, they have introduced The Year Ahead, 366 genealogy tips will make 2024 your best research year yet by Lisa A Alzo. Lisa mapped out a day-by-day research plan.

July 28 – What is the best advice one of your parents gave you? Write it up, then share with family.

My parents have been gone many years. The one advice I most remember from my father has to do with writing. He stated that sometimes you just have to start. Jot down points you want to cover and then go back and expand on those points. Before you realize it, you will have the document completed. I use this advice often when I am creating a PowerPoint for my genealogy society.

From my mother, it has to do with cooking. She mentioned that a person should always have certain staples in their kitchen, such as noodles, spaghetti sauce to name a few, so when unexpected guest shows up, you can always throw together a meal. In my cupboard, I have noodles, rice, powder milk (sometimes a recipe only wants ¼ cup or less of milk), spaghetti sauce, a couple cans of soup and can meats like chicken, tuna and even Spam (which I like better than ham).

July 26 – New York joined the Union today in 1788. Find resources from the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org.

When I was a DAR (Daughter’s of the American Revolution) registrar, New York seemed to be the hardest state for finding source documents. I wish I knew about this resource back then. There is a fee, but it might be worth it for a six-month or yearly period. Just remember to make it your top priority and concentrate on your New York ancestry.

July 25 – Work smarter and faster by using computer keyboard shortcuts. Search the help menu in your software program, or grab our cheat sheet www.familytreemagazine.com/freebie/free-computer-keyboard-shortcuts-guide.

You will have to provide your email, but trust me when I say, that the information I get from Family Tree Magazine’s emails are very useful. I find that I use keyboard shortcuts less and less today than I use to. Some of these features are just as easy to find by clicking the right button on your mouse. However, I still use the shortcuts for copy, cut and paste often.

One shortcut that has changed for me with my new computer is the Print Screen function (I have no button on my current keyboard) which is now the Windows key + Shift + S. This brings up the snipping tool. It’s very helpful if you have a drop-down menu option selected, when I select the snipping tool icon on my desktop, it sometimes closes these drop-down menu options. While, the shortcut doesn’t and then I can copy and paste into a how-to-do document.

In the January/February 2024 issue of Family Tree Magazine, they have introduced The Year Ahead, 366 genealogy tips will make 2024 your best research year yet by Lisa A Alzo. Lisa mapped out a day-by-day research plan.

July 24 – Revisit a family’s census records, and make notes about their neighbors. Do you see any familiar names?

I find my relatives in small communities being neighbors. Sometimes, a child of my ancestor might go and live with a neighbor as a farm hand or helping in the home. Census records are still my first record I like to visit to get a snapshot of the family unit.

July 23 – Make a list of your most-used genealogy websites. Create a bookmarks folder for them in your web browser, or hyperlink them in a Word document for quick access.

I like the idea of a Word or Excel document; you can even store it on your desktop for quick access. By creating a document, you can add a description of the website, perhaps notes on what branch of the family it might be useful for. You can easily organize your hyperlinks and create categories for reference. I know I can organize my bookmarks by folders on my web browser, but being able to add that description of the website can be very useful.

July 22– Consult the FamilySearch Wiki’s letter-writing guides www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Category:Letter_Writing_Guides to help you contact relatives and archives in other countries.

I decided to check out the German Letter Writing Guide to see what it has. It explains the basic outline of a letter. Something I was taught in school, however many schools don’t teach this anymore, so for younger generations, this is very important. It explains how to handle payments, using translations, checking for email. However, if you need to send a physical letter out, how to address the envelope, foreign countries are a little different. You will need to visit the post office for the proper postage. It has the translation for greetings, dates, introductions, biographical information, genealogy requests, referral request and more. Plus, it even has a sample letter.

Remember when requesting information, be precise, give as much information as you know and keep the request simple to one or two items.

July 21 – Say what? Decode archaic terms in records or correspondence with the dictionary at freepages.rootsweb.com/~randyj2222/genealogy/gendict.html.

Terms change over the years. Slang is introduced into our language or a word might take on a new meaning. For example; Karen has a another meaning than just a woman’s name. Terms in wills or land records use all kind of terms that are not common knowledge. Perhaps add this bookmark to your newly organized list.

I found a celebrity in my family tree by accident. While viewing a distant relatives obituary, it stated she was the mother of Donna Reed, born Donna Bell Mullenger. I am related through the Tyler Line.

Geneanet even shows other members who might be related to that person along with other celebrities. You can upload your family tree too. Creating and updating your family tree on Geneanet is free, whatever the number of individuals.

Hiring a professional researcher might not be cheap, so make sure you do some of the background research first. Don’t forget to record your sources and when you hire the professional, be precise on what you want to find. You want to hire someone trustworthy, so make sure you check out their work samples, public reviews and credentials. Keep in mind that there are no guarantee they will find anything. You are getting a pledge that a genealogist will use paid time effectively and search for information in the best way possible.

Is your family into doing jigsaw puzzles? You could always create other fun items, I took a few family photos and created a deck of cards with the pictures on the three court cards (King, Queen and Jack). Really, they could be added to any card.

July 17 – Put on your detective hat, get out your magnifying glass, and take a closer look at family documents and photographs for clues you may have missed.

Reviewing your previous research is always a must. You might know more about your family today then you did last year. Since I am currently researching and identifying all the descendants of one of my 3rd great grandparents, as I go through the family, I first look at what I have already discovered. Obituaries for example, perhaps the names will make more sense now. Maybe if they listed all their grandchildren (first name’s only) along with any spouses, I have figured out some of the grandchildren and I can add their spouse’s name. This will make researching those individuals a little more easier in identifying if I have the correct person.

Create folders: Group bookmarks into categories by creating folders. For example: in Google Chrome, you can right-click on the bookmarks bar, select Add Folder, name the folder and chose where to save it. You can then drag bookmarks into the folder.

For genealogy, you might want to group by subject, location, record type, etc. I have bookmarks to research sites, how to use various genealogy software programs, DNA, DAR (Daughter’s of the America Revolution), and some are how to do articles.

July 15– Your genealogy break was nice. Now get back to research by tackling a brick-wall ancestor with fresh eyes.

We all have those elusive ancestors who just don’t want to be found. This is about the only time I start looking at other people’s trees. Do distant cousins have any information about those ancestors? Can I verify their sources and do I come to the same conclusion? What my DNA matches? Do I have any that seem to descend from that elusive ancestor through a sibling of my ancestor?

Create a timeline to see where your ancestor lived and research what kind of records might be available for the location and time.

July 14 – Clear you mind from genealogy clutter. Do something completely unrelated to family history today: Go for a walk, ride a bike or see a movie.

Even though I tell people I would love to do Genealogy every day, I really don’t think I would want to do it every day. I do take a break from doing genealogy to do other things. We would be really boring people if we only did genealogy every day, all day long. However, I will be honest, I like to take walks in cemeteries or see a historical based movie. I watch TV shows about genealogy because I love genealogy.

I also have other interest such as gardening, canning, crocheting, playing board games, doing home improvements, going on vacation and much more. Then when I come back to doing genealogy, I am refresh, seeing things in a different light and am able to resolve research challenges.

July 11 – For World Population Day, hone your international research sills by perusing records from an ancestral country. The FamilySearch Wiki has guides to help you start www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Guided_Research_for_Online_Records

I looked up Ireland and then Catholic, followed by Marriage and it gave a link to FindMypast which supposedly is free. I typed in my desired surname and it came up with a link to view 51 results. It prompted me to sign up for free to see them. I already had a free login account; thus, I used that one. It did show me the 51 results with a image and transcription icon link to the right of each item. I first click on the image and it was very difficult to read the fancy handwriting, but not impossible. My person was on the bottom of the page and it didn’t have any defined columns.

The transcription of the record looked very nice with a link to the National Library of Ireland register. However, no parents were listed and thus, if I already knew their marriage date, it might be helpful. Especially if I didn’t have the female’s surname. However, since it is only listed as the Spouse’s last name, this could be a previous married name or the women’s maiden name.

The link took me to the beginning of the microfilm collection and thus I would have to page to the spot in the microfilm to see my person. Using FindMyPast was easier, since I didn’t have to scroll through all the pages, through different parishes to finally find it on page 91 where the entry was recorded.

July 6 – Attend summer school at Family Tree University  https://store.familytreemagazine.com/family-tree-magazine/courses/

I am a firm supporter of learning new skills where genealogy is involved. However, before signing up for something that requires a fee, please make sure you are ready to take the class. With many offerings that are free out there, please explore those options before throwing down money for learning. I have taken various classes over the years and I did learn many new skills. Some of these classes were paid classes and some were free. I have found that before I took any paid class, I made sure I had the time to devote to the class and I was at a skill level to understand the material being taught.

Once I signed up for a year subscription of Webinars from a company that offers many free webinars. After the first showing of the webinar it is still free for about a week. However, subscription users had access to syllabus. I found that I didn’t utilize that service as much as I should had. I did get the subscription at a sale price, but I felt that I hadn’t thought it all the way through and really didn’t have the time needed to devote to that subscription. There have been years, where my genealogy goals for the year, involved learning new skills. However, my current goals are more about finishing certain projects. I do try to watch a webinar here and there throughout the month.

My father took a Y-DNA test with FTDNA and many years after our trip and after my father passed away, her husband also took a Y-DNA test with FTDNA. It shows that they are a match with a genetic distance of 4 steps.

In the January/February 2024 issue of Family Tree Magazine, they have introduced The Year Ahead, 366 genealogy tips will make 2024 your best research year yet by Lisa A Alzo. Lisa mapped out a day-by-day research plan.

July 3 – See how lineage societies such as the Daughters of the American Revolution www.dar.org can help with your research.

Before I became a member of DAR, I visited their website. It can be quite overwhelming. There is a link titled Genealogy, then in the Genealogy Research (GRS) people can look up Ancestors, Members and Descendants. How I found out I had an approved Patriot (Ancestor) was to look up all my ancestors who were living during the Revolutionary years. I only had a few names to check, my research didn't go back that far on many lines. Then I discovered that my 3rd great grandmother’s sister’s descendant had joined and all I had to do was prove my lineage up to my 4th great grandparents. The remaining generations were already proven.

When I became a Registrar for DAR, I used the GRS to look up prospective members ancestors in the Descendant’s Database. I would start creating a tree for this prospective member and then check to see if any of their ancestors where in the Descendant Database. If they were, I would see who the proven Ancestor was and many times, I only had to prove the lineage from the member to their ancestor who was in the Descendant Database.

I could also check the members who joined with common ancestors as the prospective member and see if they had additional lines proven (called supplements). If those additional Patriots were also my prospective member's Ancestor, they too could submit a supplement if they choose to do so.

Be on a look out for Red items under Patriot’s records, some lineages have been proven wrong from later applications and may no longer be a valid option. However, with all the members who joined since DAR began, there is a lot of lineages to review. As with any tree, whether through a lineage society or found elsewhere, a good researcher will verify the genealogy before claiming it as their own.

Also, on the day of their Ceremony, they must return their Permanent Resident Card. July 1– For Canada Day, see what resources are online through the Library and Archives Canada  https://library-archives.canada.ca/eng/Pages/Home.aspx

I have a branch of my family that settled in Canada, during the Revolutionary Times. Thus, I decided to try looking up that surname. The First World War Personnel Records are a goldmine. They not only list the young man and his birthdate and place, but gives his father’s name too. I saw one that listed his wife as his next of kin, thus I could at least see a first name for the wife. I will have to explore this resource a little more when I am researching that surname.
